Tips for Making Moving Less Stressful for Your Pets

Cat in a Box
Moving can be a stressful time for our pets. Whether youre moving a short or long distance, thinking about your pet’s well-being is as important as the move itself. Many moving companies in St Louis, MO, have excellent advice, but here are a couple of extra handy tips to make it easier for you and your pets when the big day arrives.

Moving with Cats

It’s hard to move when a cat while is wandering off into boxes and disrupting movers. If not handled properly, even loving cats can become overly stressed, act out, or be an obstacle for moving companies.

On the day of your move, secure your cat in a pet carrier. Fill it with your cats favorite blankets and toys to create a sense of security. Do not take your cat out at any time during the move. Moving companies often advise that it may be helpful to talk to your veterinarian about possible anti-anxiety medication to ease the process. Once youve moved into your new home, choose a room to dedicate to your cat, and focus on gradually transitioning your cat to the new home over time.

Moving with a Dog

Routine and familiarity are critical when moving with dogs. Throughout your move, keep your dog by your side at all times. You are the person who keeps your dog grounded, and they will feel more secure with you there. With strangers from moving companies in the house and changing their home, dogs can react to the situation poorly.

With dogs, leaving them at the kennel during a move can do more damage than good. If your dog returns from the kennel to a brand-new home, your dog may be stressed and react. You want to aim for a smooth transition and to be there every step of the way to instill comfort and security during the move.
